Tips for Brilliant Team Conversations

Preparing and facilitating a team discussion to set future behaviours and expectations.

  1. Share why you want to talk about this topic with them and share it with them face-to-face in a team meeting. Consider sharing a personal story to bring the topic to life but you absolutely need to be clear about why this topic matters and what you want to achieve by having the conversation.

  2. Pick the questions you want to explore and share those with them in advance – ask them to think about what the future should look like for the topic of focus and get them thinking about where the gaps and opportunities are.

  3. Bring them together and facilitate the conversation, giving everyone a chance to be involved and bringing everyone into the conversation.

  4. Allow everyone to reflect post-meeting and check in with people in 1:1 meetings – this allows discussions on a 1:1 basis to explore how they are personally feeling about the topic and the discussions. This gives you a chance to hear anything else they have reflected on or address any personal issues raised by the topic.

  5. Bring them back together to set the way forward; what will you commit to as a team, and how will you work together to achieve this?
